The perfect golf tee height for every tee shot

Getting the right golf tee height can make a big difference in your game. Whether you are teeing off with a driver or using a fairway wood, the height of your tee affects how the ball launches, the spin you generate, and ultimately how far and straight your shot goes.

Many golfers overlook this simple adjustment, but dialing in the correct tee height for each club and shot can improve consistency and distance. This post explains how to choose the right golf tee height depending on the club you use and the type of shot you want to hit.

Why Golf Tee Height Matters

Tee height influences the launch angle and spin rate of your golf ball. If the tee is too low, you might hit the ground before the ball or create too much backspin, causing the ball to balloon and lose distance. If the tee is too high, you risk hitting the top of the ball, resulting in a weak shot or slices.

The goal is to position the ball so your clubface strikes it at the optimal point on the clubhead, maximizing energy transfer and ball flight. Different clubs have different optimal contact points, so adjusting tee height accordingly helps you get the best results.

Golf Tee Height for Drivers

The driver is designed to hit the ball on the upswing, so the ball should sit higher on the tee compared to other clubs. A good rule of thumb is to have about half the ball above the top edge of the driver’s clubface.

  • Standard driver tee height: 55-80mm

  • Why this height: It allows you to sweep the ball off the tee with a slight upward angle, promoting a higher launch and lower spin.

  • Adjustments: If you tend to hit down on the ball with your driver, lower the tee slightly to encourage a cleaner strike.

Using a tee that is too short with your driver can cause you to hit the ground first, reducing distance and increasing side spin. Too tall, and you risk topping the ball.

Golf Tee Height for Fairway Woods and Hybrids

Fairway woods and hybrids are usually hit with a sweeping motion but with less upward angle than a driver. The ball should be teed lower than with a driver, just enough to lift it slightly off the ground.

  • Fairway wood tee height: 25-45mm

  • Hybrid tee height: 10-35mm

  • Why this height: It helps you make clean contact while still getting some lift on the ball.

If you tee the ball too high with these clubs, you might hit the top of the ball or lose control. Too low, and you risk hitting the ground first.

Golf Tee Height for Irons and Wedges

Hitting a tee shot with an iron on a short par 3 or when using a driving iron, a very low tee height can help.

  • Iron tee height: Just enough to lift the ball off the ground, about 10-32mm or less

  • Wedge tee height: Rarely teed, but if used, keep it very low, similar to irons

The goal is to avoid changing the normal ball position and strike pattern for these clubs. Teeing the ball too high with irons or wedges can cause thin or topped shots.

Adjusting Golf Tee Height for Different Shots

Sometimes you want to change tee height based on the shot shape or course conditions.

  • Windy conditions: Lower the tee height slightly to keep the ball flight lower and reduce wind effect.

  • Teeing off on tight fairways: Use a lower tee height to encourage a controlled, penetrating ball flight.

  • Maximizing distance: Use the recommended higher tee height for drivers to maximize launch angle and carry.

  • Shot shaping: Adjust tee height to influence spin and trajectory; higher tee for higher launch and softer landing, lower tee for lower, more piercing shots.

Choosing the Right Golf Tee Length

Golf tees come in various lengths, typically ranging from 1.5 inches to 4 inches or more. Choosing the right tee length depends on the club you plan to use and your preferred tee height.

  • Long tees (70mm): Best for drivers and some fairway woods

  • Medium tees (54mm): Good for fairway woods and hybrids

  • Short tees (32mm): Ideal for irons and wedges or low tee shots

Using a tee that is too long or too short can make it difficult to achieve the correct tee height. Experiment with different tee lengths to find what works best for your swing and clubs.

Practical Tips for Setting Golf Tee Height

  • Mark your tees: Use a marker or tape to mark your preferred tee height on your tees for quick and consistent setup.

  • Practice with different heights: Spend time on the range testing various tee heights with each club to see what produces the best ball flight and distance.

  • Pay attention to ball position: Tee height works together with ball position in your stance. Adjust both for optimal contact.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Teeing the ball too low with a driver: This reduces launch angle and distance.

  • Using the same tee height for all clubs: Different clubs require different heights.

  • Ignoring course conditions: Adjust tee height for wind and course layout.

  • Not practicing tee height adjustments: Without practice, you won’t know what works best for your swing.
